How many Humpback whales are there?
During whale season, the iconic North Pacific Humpbacks can be spotted all over the waters of Maui. No matter where you look, you'll find quite literally thousands upon thousands of whales enjoying the warmth and sunshine of Maui. In fact, there are so many whales, you'd be hard pressed to keep track of them all. You might be curious, though, just how many humpbacks whale are there exactly? Lucky for us, whale researchers have a pretty good idea. According to the most recent

Life is Great, Snorkeling Makes it Better
Why do guests love our Maui snorkel tours?? Feedback from guests tells us that they love our small group setting; it makes it feel like you're on a private charter without breaking the bank. There is also shade available, which a lot of the smaller boats and rafts do not provide...very important in the hot Maui sun. Crew also can make or break a boat tour and our crew is happy, attentive and fun! When cruising our fast boat, Kainalu across the ‘Au ‘Au channel to Lanai we ofte

Endemic Capital of the World
An "endemic” species is one that lives nowhere else on earth. You may not know that the Hawaiian marine environment has more endemic marine species than anywhere else on the planet, approximately 455 of them. Because of our isolation the species that were hardy enough to make it all the way out here have evolved into their own kind due the fact that small numbers of arrivals have a higher chance of mutating into a new species. Most of the fish that got here actually didn’t s

Why is West Maui So Famous For Humpback Whales?
There are Humpback whales in all the world’s oceans but what makes West Maui so famous for Humpback whale watching tours?? Location, location, location. West Maui is protected by the off shore islands of Kahoolawe, Lanai and Molokai in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean. This makes a shallow water basin that is perfect for the mothers to deliver and raise their babies. It’s kind of like raising your baby in a shallow, warm bathtub with no predators. Secondly, we have two st

Intimate Whale Watching
There is no better place in the world to go on a Humpback whale watching tour than Maui. When coming for a visit, it is a MUST-DO activity. If you miss out, it would be like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. Now, wouldn’t it be nice to go to the Eiffel Tower with only 20 other people? Well, that’s what we offer at Makai Adventures, small, intimate groups of no more than 20 people. No cattle boats here! Not only do we have small groups, our Maui whale watching t

It’s Humpback Whale Season!
December 15 – April 15, the waters off of Maui are transformed into a National Marine Sanctuary for the North Pacific Humpback whales. It’s a magical and special time of year for all. There are laws set in place to protect them and no jet skis or Parasail boats are allowed to navigate in our waters out of respect and safety for the true Hawaiian locals, the majestic Humpback. They venture here from Alaska, where they feed and spend the summers in the nutrient rich waters wher

Why do Humpback Whales Breach?
When going on a Maui whale watching tour with Makai Adventures one of the most popular questions our Naturalists receive is why do Humpback whales breach? The answer is that the scientists don’t really know for sure but have many hypotheses that could be brought up. The main belief is that they are communicating with other whales in the area in some form. The males are asserting dominance in the breeding grounds to impress females and a breach is quite impressive! They also c

Maui’s Whales: One of Nature’s True Wonders
These creatures of the deep blue are fascinating! Did you know Humpback Whales can grow to 60 feet in length? Even more amazing is the size of a newborn! Baby whales — or calves — can be 15 feet long from the moment they first enter the ocean water! Even more unbelievable than that? A calf can weigh nearly one ton, drink up to 600 liters of milk a day and continue to grow for about 10 years! While in the warm waters surrounding Maui, female whales give birth to their calves.
